Bunion Surgery

A standard operation for bunions: an incision on the inner side of the big toe allows the deformed bone to be corrected.

For moderate bunions, the soft tissue on the outer side of the big toe is released first, and part of the protruding metatarsal is cut and fixed (osteotomy). For severe bunions, tendons, joints and muscles can also be corrected.

AnesthesiaLocal rather than general
RecoveryWalking in a support shoe 1 to 2 days after surgery
Hospital stay2 to 3 days recommended
Operating timeAbout 30 minutes

Left untreated, severe bunions can change how you walk and lead to knee arthritis and back pain, so early treatment matters.

WE LIVETreatment matched to severity: after an accurate diagnosis we perform osteotomy to straighten the bone, or soft-tissue correction of tendons, joints and muscles.

Recommended for

Treats the cause

The bone is realigned, so even severe deformity can be treated.

Restores function

Joint correction and functional recovery at once.

Both feet at once

Both feet can be operated on together.

Questions patients ask

Will it come back?

In the past only the bump was shaved off, so it often recurred. Now the bone is realigned and secondary changes in the surrounding tissue are corrected, so recurrence is rare.

Do I need surgery if it doesn't hurt?

Not necessarily. But if the deformity makes shoes hard to wear, wears one side of your shoes down, or the second toe rides over the big toe, surgery is worth considering.

AftercareFor a while, walk without pushing off through the big toe and avoid narrow shoes and high heels. Foot baths and simple toe stretches lower the risk of recurrence.
