Ankle Ligament Injury
What people usually call a sprained ankle.
One of the most common ligament injuries: when the ankle is badly twisted or rolls inward, the outer ankle ligaments are damaged, causing pain and swelling.
Common causes
01
Injury from intense sports
02
Missteps, falls or rolling the ankle
03
Repeatedly rolling the ankle
Signs to watch for
- Pain over the ligaments on the outer ankle
- Severe pain when the ankle is pressed
- Over time, the ankle gives way, clunks or hurts
How we diagnose
X-ray
The basic first test. Further tests may be added for a definite diagnosis.
MRI
Shows soft tissue that X-ray cannot, such as muscles, ligaments, discs, cartilage, nerves and blood vessels.
How we treat it
Partial tears are treated without surgery. We treat step by step, using conservative care if the tear is not severe.
Prolotherapy
Under live ultrasound guidance, a growth-promoting solution is injected into weakened ligaments and tendons. The controlled healing response it triggers promotes self-repair and strengthens the tissue.
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy
Used across orthopedics, physical therapy and sports medicine, shockwave therapy aids recovery without surgery or painkillers and suits many conditions that cause acute or chronic pain.
Arthroscopy
Through a minimal incision under about 5 mm, an arthroscope with a tiny camera and special instruments is inserted into the joint. It shows areas that are hard to see on X-ray, allowing accurate diagnosis and treatment at the same time.
When surgery is consideredIf you keep rolling the ankle despite non-surgical care, with pain and instability that disrupt daily life, the damaged ligament is repaired, or if it is too damaged to repair, arthroscopic ligament repair or reconstruction is performed.
